Those figures throughout history who's passions ignite your own goals, who's struggles are yours, whose handwork and hardship you are indebted. Hot Topic: Portraits of 20th Century Feminists, is a pictorial tracing of the lineage of any feminist. Taking it's queue from the riot girl band Le Tigre's song of the same name, Kirsten Mccrea's art-work produces mixed-media portraits of all the feminists named in the infamous Hot Topic song. Complete with short descriptions of every featured inspirational figure of feminist lineage, it traces the paths from Arethera Franklin to Kathleen Hannon. With artists, activists, writers, musicians, culture makers and the likes, some well-renoun and others lost in the barrage of mainstream celebrity culture, Hot Topic is an artistic archive of feminist plights. As described by the Montreal-based artist: "In a world that celebrates manufactured pop-stars but forgets the names of suffragettes, I wanted to find a way to solidify the memory of the underground superstars whose creativity and ideas have made such a difference to feminists of my generation."
