Food Banks
- Food Share FoodShare was founded in 1985 by then Mayor of Toronto, Art Eggleton, and others concerned about the growth of hunger and food banks that had taken place in the wake of the recession of the early 1980’s. FoodShare’s original mandate was to co-ordinate emergency food services, and to collect and distribute food. The Hunger Hotline was established as a volunteer-run referral service for people seeking these services in their neighborhood. Another key part of FoodShare’s mandate was to advocate for policies that would ensure adequate employment, and the income necessary to enable all people to meet their basic needs. learn more
- FoodLink Hotline FoodLink is a volunteer-staffed telephone referral service that connects people with the food programs in their neighbourhoods. The FoodLink database contains over 1300 food program listings in Toronto. The Hotline has been operating since 1985- one of the first programs FoodShare established after its founding. Originally, the Hunger Hotline, as it was called, primarily referred callers to food banks and other emergency programs. learn more
- Good Food Box The Good Food Box runs like a large buying club with centralized buying and co-ordination. Twice a month individuals place orders for boxes with volunteer co-ordinators in their neighborhood and receive a box brimming with fresh, tasty produce. learn more
