Fall is a season that we naturally associate with change. The leaves turn colour, the birds fly south and the nights get colder. Many of us spend more time inside our homes, rediscovering our blankets and preparing for the long winter ahead. As the warm weather fades we can sometimes forget that Fall is also a time of auspicious beginnings. A wonderful time to take on new projects and to slow down and reflect on the year so far.

The celebration of February 14 as a lovers' holiday goes back thousands of years, to ancient Rome. Known as Lupercalia, it was dedicated to Juno, goddess of women and marriage. One of the traditions of that pagan festival was the selection of lovers by lottery. Young women wrote their names on slips of paper. While sitting in jail awaiting his fate, he befriended the jailer's daughter (and cured her blindness). Last December, I received a call from a Globe & Mail reporter. The occasion was a year-end wrap-up of the year in sex, and she wanted an opinion - or at least a pithy quote.
