Moustache Movember! November is prostate cancer awareness month. Renamed Movember by some friends in 2003, dudes grow moustaches to make a statement - to say we care about this and we can make a difference - donning the upper-lip hair as a badge or ribbon of sorts. Starting clean-shaven on the first of the month, participants don’t touch that razor till the end of the month and collect donations and sponsorships throughout.
So partake if you wish in growing a moustache, or, donate if you wish to Prostate Cancer Canada. Let’s all take a moment to think about our prostates, or the prostates of those we love, and how we can keep them healthy.
Here are some helpful hints:
On another note, the holidays are coming, and Come As You Are is all stocked up with everything you need for that special someone, or those special people, in your life. Or maybe you just wanna treat yourself, which is a-ok too! We’ve got some suggestions here, but feel free to give us a call, email, or drop by our Queen Street store for advice on how to be the hit of your holiday celebrations!

Whether you were raised in the trick-or-treat tradition of Hallowe’en or you have children in your life who celebrate it now, it is difficult to not associate this season with kids in costumes cruising the neighbourhood for candy.
As many of us know, Hallowe’en began as a whole family affair - rituals designed to bring in the good spirits and keep us safe from the bad ones. In fact, with all of the good cheer, masks, and costumes, the Hallowe’en of days of yore is a great reminder of how we adults in modern times have really lost our way when it comes to adult play.
We’d like to suggest that we adult folk reclaim a bit of the fun and imagination of Hallowe’en and give ourselves permission to make believe again.
At any other time of year, costumes and fantasy can seem a bit out of place or contrived, but just as Valentine’s Day provides an excuse for red roses and chocolate, Hallowe’en gives us room to free our imagination and experiment with a whole other level of fantasy and adult play.
This All Hallow’s Eve, let us all follow the lead of our friends in the queer and BDSM communities and make a little sexy make believe ourselves. Whether you celebrate your fantasies in the privacy of your own home, meander through a Hallowe’en street party or debauch at a fetish club, use this holiday to expand your horizons and play a little trick or treat with yourself.

This newsletter marks the beginning of our co-operative’s 13th year in existence. In some ways it seems like only yesterday that we first opened our doors (and six months later launched our first website). But it also feels like a long, long time ago. Much has changed and much has remained the same. When you’re a member of a co-operative every part of doing business is a little different than when you work at a regular undemocratic business.

This is the time of year when everyone - from chocolatiers to tax lawyers - cites some "sexpert" or random statistic to entice you to buy some gizmo to improve your sex life. This kind of hucksterism is one of the things we hate the most about the business we're in. Don Draper was right when he said it isn't sex that sells, but if sex is what you care about, it's unfortunate that you are forced to navigate smoke and mirrors advertising and misinformation. At Come As You Are, we'll help you find your way by providing the most accurate and up-to-date information and quality products. learn more

You'd think with a store full of erotic goodies that we'd want to use this space to tell you about the hottest vibrators and best DVD gift sets for holiday giving. But we're not your usual sex shop or your usual co-op, so we rarely do things the usual way. What we want to tell you about instead is what we think our real gift is as a company; our sexual culture and values. We recently launched our new website and made public a document we'd been working on for some time, the eleven core values of Come As You Are. Over the next few newsletters we want to share these with you. As this is the season of giving and receiving, we thought we'd start with values that reflect the importance of both to sexual pleasure, health, and happiness. learn more- fall 2009, no 46

It's an irony not lost on us here at Come As You Are that almost all sex education resources are geared to people under 18. Not that teens don't have a right to information and resources that help them understand the benefits and risks of whatever kind of sex they're having. They do. But the truth is that for most of us our sex lives get more complicated and more interesting as we age. People of all ages need and deserve sex education. learn more- spring 2009, no 45

As a worker co-operative, change is part of our every day lives. Who we are and how we do things changes all the time. We bring in new owners. We develop new ways to help customers. We struggle to balance a democratic, ethically run co-operative and a busy, financially successful business. But those changes pale in comparison to the kinds of changes we witness every day in our store and online with customers. learn more- winter 2008, no 44

At Come As You Are, sex is a year-round affair. It's the first thing we think about in the morning and the last thing on our minds as we lay our collective heads down to rest. So we wanted to offer a few of our holiday sex dos and don'ts that we've gleaned from 11 years of helping you stay sexually sane over the holidays. learn more- summer 2008, no 43
